5 Simple Ways to Stay Motivated When Life Feels Heavy

Updated: Oct 15, 2025

Hello everyone! Did you miss me?

As some of you already know, I’ve been working on a huge project—my Girl Scout Gold Award. It’s been exciting, meaningful, and honestly…a little overwhelming. Between that and my senior year of high school, my motivation took a hit. My grades weren’t great, my schedule was packed, and I felt like I had all these ideas trapped inside my head with no space to breathe.

So, I took a step back. And now that I’m here, writing again, I feel like I’m finally home.

That’s what today’s post is about: staying motivated, even when life feels like it’s running faster than you can keep up. Whether you’re a student juggling assignments, a young adult trying to balance school and work, or just someone struggling to find your spark again, this one’s for you.

1. Write Down Your Goals

You can’t reach what you can’t see.

Start by writing your goals daily, weekly, monthly, or even quarterly. Having a visual reminder helps you stay focused on why you’re doing what you’re doing.

Think of it like a roadmap for your dreams. You might take detours, but when your goal is written down, you’ll always find your way back.

Tip: Keep your goals visible, such as in your journal, mirror, or phone wallpaper.

2. Cancel Out the Distractions

Distractions are like weeds; they slowly steal energy from your goals.

I know it’s easier said than done, but cutting out distractions (even temporarily) creates space for clarity. Sometimes, those distractions might even be people. It doesn’t mean you have to cut them out completely; it just means protecting your time and focus when needed.

When you clear out what drains you, you make room for what grows you.

3. Use Positive Affirmations

Affirmations aren’t just “feel-good” quotes; they’re mindset tools.

When you say “I can do this,” your mind begins to believe it. When you say “I’m capable,” your actions start to match that truth. Affirmations rewire your subconscious and remind you of the strength you already have.

Try these to start your day:

  • “I am capable of handling what comes my way.”

  • “I have the energy and discipline to keep going.”

  • “I am proud of my progress, even the small steps.”

4. Reward Yourself Along the Way

Motivation thrives on small wins.

Set up a reward system to celebrate progress, no matter how small. Finished your essay? Grab your favorite ice cream. Completed a tough project? Treat yourself to a night out or a cozy self-care evening.

Rewards remind you that discipline doesn’t have to be draining; it can be joyful, too.

5. Surround Yourself with Motivating People

When your energy runs low, your circle matters most.

Surround yourself with people who push you, inspire you, and remind you of your “why.” Sometimes motivation isn’t about doing it alone, it’s about letting others remind you of what’s already inside you.

Share your goals with a friend or mentor. Accountability and encouragement go a long way.

See? Staying motivated doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about small, consistent actions that keep your fire burning.

Remember this: you can do anything you put your mind to. You just have to believe that you’re capable, and you are. So write down your goals, take a deep breath, and take that first small step today. Your future self will thank you for it.
